Man Cave Chairs

Whether you have a desk job that has managers refusing to invest in proper seating; or you spend most of your waking hours standing, entering your man cave and collapsing into a quality chair is a surefire way to relieve stress.

But, much like those frugal managers, furniture manufacturers cut costs through botched upholstery work and corner-cutting construction. The bad eggs have their way of blending in with the crowd, making it hard to distinguish the good from the bad.

Luckily, we’ve trawled through hundreds of items and picked out some of our favorites ranging in type, budget, material and style. In the future, if a man cave chair fits the bill, we’ll be sure to include it here.

Armchairs

The chair so good they combined the words. Before the poker table, surround sound or sports memorabilia are thought about, armchairs continue to be the first buy for the den. As such, we have painstakingly dug through our trusty furniture collection box and pulled out only the best man cave chairs.

Divano Roma Classic Scroll

Classic scroll style armchair
See Current Price

Dimensions (LWH) 31" x 44" x 33"
Seat Height 17.5" from ground

Chesterfield style furniture has come a long way from its beginning – thought to have been first commissioned in the 1700s by an English Lord. But, yet with others changing shape by the year, it has stayed true to its roots by retaining that core, premium look.

Straight from the name, the armrests (and backrest) curve back into the frame which, along with the tufts, goes to resemble a classic scroll. That introduces a problem, though: having the back level with the arms gives you no neck support. So if you are accustomed to a headrest it may take a few lounging sessions in your man cave to adjust.

If your den has space for this chair to stretch out and you dig the style, you’d be rightly thrilled to have this waiting for you after work.

Gordon Tufted Chair

Rustic looking tufted chair
See Current Price

Dimensions (LWH) 38.25" x 42.5" x 32"

This is for those of you who are after a more traditional take on the Chesterfield look. Similar rounded arms, similar tufts throughout, but a far richer rustic appearance.

Although they both have bonded leather upholstery, Home Decorators Collection (seller) use recycled leather by treating tannery left-overs and mixing it with composite material. The result being a durable, genuine looking chair with a smaller price tag.

Make sure to measure the height of your door to see if it will fit through. Note that the legs screw off and on which shaves off a few inches.

Don’t like the color above? At the same price, you can also get it in blue, black, gray, and white (with the former two using bonded leather and the latter two using an awesome linen).

ExceptionalSheets Club Chair

Club chair with light-colored fabric

Weight Under 76 lbs
Dimensions (LWH) 34" x 36" x 37"

Assembly process (no toolkit needed):

  1. Attach both arms to the base
  2. Place the back into the metal bracket and connect the base to where the fabric ends at the bottom
  3. Screw on the four legs and you’re off to the races!

Although the manufacturer claims it takes under seven minutes to set up, expect to spend a little longer due to the slightly tedious back attachment.

That almond color you see above won’t be for everyone so feel free to click the button below to see the other colors on offer, including black, chocolate, smoky gray, azure blue and three other lighter shades.

Us men aren’t known for our interior decorating skills, but it isn’t hard to match a chair with a man cave when you’ve got eight colors at your disposal.

Lastly, although the armrests curve out slightly, the sides will be flush with whatever you decide to stick next to it. A true space saver.

Wide Stance Bonded Leather

Tufted man cave chair with high back
See Current Price

Weight 60 lbs
Dimensions (LWH) 33.7" x 34.6" x 34.6"

This fine chair, like the Chesterfields, has a tufted back which enhances its visual appeal. But rather than having a streamlined height all through the sides and back, it has that more typical look with the low armrests and high concaved back (i.e. club chair).

Robust bonded leather upholstery covers the entire thing, including the generously padded seat. The armrests, however, are quite firm due to lacking that inner material. Good if you value the extra space to move around in. Not so good if your forearms will lay there for hours each day.

In general, club chairs are extremely comfortable and look great in most types of dens. The only thing we would’ve liked to see is a stand-alone seat. It is attached to the base which takes away the ability to flip it around every few months – essentially doubling its life.

Bretford Series with Encasing Frame

Modern style seating with encasing frame

Weight 58 lbs
Dimensions (LWH) 28.5" x 35" x 27.5"

If you’re leaning towards the contemporary look, Flash Furniture has you covered.

The black leather (faux) upholstery is encased by a stainless steel skeleton which gives it extra support. You have the option to buy it in white, but I’m sure many of you will agree with me when I say it’s a bit out there. Plus, removing stains must be near impossible.

Both the seat and back are separate from the base, allowing you to clean the leather and reverse them to even out use. A seemingly minute detail, but one which makes sense when the time comes to remove them (I’m looking at you, pistachio shells and dripping beer froth!).

Traditional Tufted with Ottoman

Traditional armchair with matching ottoman
See Current Price

Weight Under 61 lbs
Dimensions (LWH) 31" x 32.5" x 41"

Some chairs can get away with less padding – and this is one of them. From the wingback style providing extra head support; to the traditional armrest scrolls with nail head trimming; to the sturdy legs contrasting with the tufts, it sets the standard for grandeur furniture.

The matching ottoman, most often associated with recliners, could well be the deciding factor for picking this one. Just envision it in your room first. Traditional tends to clash with minimalistic.

Coaster Home Furnishings don’t make pieces solely for being admired from afar – they make them for everyday use, too. No need for a separate chair depending on the activity. Read, relax, entertainment – this fits the bill.

LHD Simon Club Chair

Curved barrel chair
See Current Price

Weight 41 lbs
Dimensions (LWH) 25.5" x 28.25" x 33"

This club chair is for those with small spaces. Being only 28 and a quarter inches wide, it is definitely on the thin end but will still fit most body types.

Hardwood is used to make the base and legs, and although they look small, there won’t be a risk of them snapping. Also, you’ll have an extra place for storage which won’t get in the way unless you tuck your feet under.

The vinyl upholstery can withstand a beating and at a fraction of the cost of leather, you get an inexpensive chair without the big sacrifice of quality.

Vinyl is a material we advise pet owners to go for due to its high tolerance for claw marks. When others rip after a few swipes, vinyl will show minimal damage.

Note: A common mistake is attaching the legs incorrectly (with the nuts on the opposite side). You will notice a few complaints about it feeling uneven. It most cases, the problem lies with the legs.

Armless Chairs

Armrests may be the more popular, but there is definitely a place for armless ones. Below are a few of our favorites that are great as a secondary chair or to utilize those small spaces.

Roundhill Furniture Oversized Seating

Tufts with a wide seat
See Current Price

Weight 26 lbs
Dimensions (LWH) 27" x 31" x 34"
Seat Height 16"

Though not suitable as your main place to sit, Roundhill has created an affordable piece perfect for a friend. In an ideal world, we’d have six massaging machines set around the room. Alas, bills must be paid; responsibilities must be met.

For the small price tag, you will enjoy laying back on a tufted blended leather outer, supported by a kiln-dried hardwood base.

The low profile design has the seat 16 inches above the ground which, unless your friends are well over 6 foot, is a suitable height to sprawl out on.

You have the option of getting it in brown (pictured above), black, red or white, but the texture may vary even though being made from the same material.

Black Chaise with Grid Stitching

Ultimate man cave chair for lounging
See Current Price

Weight 72.6 lbs
Dimensions (LWH) 68.5" x 30.5" x 29.5"

For the uninitiated, chaise longue are long chairs which come in a vast array of shapes and styles. Created with relaxation in mind, you get all the benefits of a bed without the guilt that comes along with sleeping during the day.

The differentiation is seen in the ergonomic design. It moves away from the tradition of being flat and goes for a curved design that matches the human body. No more adjusting because of a sore back.

Material combination:

  1. Easily maintainable dark vinyl upholstery with large grid stitching
  2. Hardwood frame to support the middle arch and extra length
  3. Chrome finished legs to boost both its sturdiness and modern aesthetic

With the provision of two cushions (one for the head, the other for the lower back) it deserves serious consideration. Remember to examine what constitutes the best man cave chair FOR YOU. You may need a second type for traditional sitting (assuming your den can fit them both).

Cortesi Home Sky Blue

Sky blue armless chair

Weight 20 lbs
Dimensions (LWH) 27.5" x 22" x 32"
Seat Height 16"

Pulling off this color may be difficult, but certain rooms just don’t suit plain black and white. An understanding of color theory will help determine whether you fall into that camp.

The microfiber fabric is an uncommon choice but one which better serves its bright color. Reduced rate of discoloration and industry leading stain-resistance both ensure longevity.

Lastly, metal springs hidden inside the seat save it from caving over time. And rather than feeling it prod your backside (like with poorly made replicas), the only thing you’ll notice is the extra support.

Massage Chairs

Often associated with gigantic massage machines, those with lower budgets skip over this category without noticing the alternatives. Yes, the ultimate massage chair will set you back a few grand, but the smaller robotic style provides similar quality for much less. Even if those are out of the question, specialized electric pillows can be picked up for under $100.

Here's some from those three types:

Luxury Zero Gravity Massage Chair

Premium massage chair with control pad
See Current Price

Weight 200 lbs
Dimensions (LWH) 33" x 55" x 49"

When specifically looking for a massager, the gut instinct is to start cheap and work your way up until one fits the bill. Our contention is that type of thinking should be flipped – finding the similarities between the most expensive, then working your way down. If ever there’s a time to look for quality, it’s here.

With that little disclaimer out of the way, let’s explore the core feature.

Massage nodes are found throughout the leg, back and neck area; each with separate controls.

Four massage types are available:

  1. Shiatsu (default) – Alternating pressure points which mimic that of a professional bodyworker
  2. Back Rolling – Controlled vertical motion (up/down from a fixed-point) for even distribution
  3. Vibrating – Relaxes muscles located around the cushion (excludes legs)
  4. Kneading – Targeted, deep tissue massage to eliminate knots and relieve stress in your problem areas

Though you can manually switch it on and off, let the technology automate the process by starting a set-time session. Start at a five-minute quickie or have a thirty-minute ultimate man cave chair experience.

The heating pads can also be controlled so you can set it to match the type of massage.

It is part of the premium group but still manages to have a reasonable price tag. If you’re actively looking for one, click the button below as I’ve only scratched the surface when it comes to features. If you’re on the fence, the next item is worth a look.

iJoy-2580 Robotic Massager

iJoy robotic massager version 2580

Weight 88 lbs
Dimensions (LWH) 44" x 35" x 40"

Coming in at nearly half the price, this robotic massager from Human Touch (quite ironic) can be described as a stripped back alternative – keeping the upper-body-essentials, dropping the leg rests.

That being said, the inbuilt control panel can set the position of recline, the massage program (back rejuvenator, lower back focus, neck/shoulder relief), and mode.

The narrow sides and reduced height allow it to go in some of the smallest rooms we’ve seen – a rarity in the massage world. And is surprisingly mobile thanks to the hidden wheels on the back.

The cup holder can house your single malt scotch for that liquid comfort, but will mean sacrificing the armrest. It’s a shame designers don’t put them on the sides of their products. 1st world problems.

Zyllion Shiatsu Pillow with Heat Pads

Pillow-sized electric massager

Weight 3.5 lbs

Craving a massage but still not convinced on a whole other chair? Then this is for you!

At a fraction of the price, you can get a pillow-sized massager can be switched with a cushion to get on the spot relief.

Two sets of two nodes rotate around to provide shiatsu-styled, deep-tissue work for the neck, upper back, lower back, or even legs; while reveling in a simultaneous heat therapy session which reduces tension just that little extra.

A concern we have with similar products is having to push back into the seat to avoid it falling. Not an ideal situation being required to adjust it every time you lean in to grab something. Zyllion has solved this problem by adding a securing strap which can wrap around most headrests.

I have bought from several different makers and this one was by far the best (still using it to this day). From the spacing of the nodes; to the pressure on my body; to the ergonomic design, it is a must have for all man caves without a stand-alone massaging chair.

After receiving a few queries about how it turns off, I wanted to note that it automatically shuts down after a set period of time – an important safety feature for if one dozes off.

For the Gamers

This could’ve been a separate page altogether. Alas, here are a few of the ones which find themselves at the top of the gaming chair category.

Are you part of the PC master race? Prescribe to the console philosophy? Just want an upgraded office chair? Then these are for you!

Akracing AK-5015 Gaming Chair

Red AK-5015 gaming chair from Akracing

Weight 55.5 lbs
Dimensions (LWH) 15.2" x 27.2" x 34.6"

Themed gaming chairs have exploded in growth in the recent years. Though the majority of manufacturers have their customers’ best interest at heart, a few are in it only for the money – cutting costs in everything they can. The makers of this chair are not only part of the former group, they are among the best in the gaming category.

Firstly, the skeleton is made from metal (armrest support all the way to the wheel joints) not only because it is notoriously resilient, but because it needs to withstand the 180-degree back recline limit.

As you’d expect, the height can be adjusted by pulling a lever (powered by a class 4 gas lift). What is not so common is the adjustable armrests – solving the awkward-arm-position issue.

Two removable cushions are provided: one for the head, and the other for your lower back lumbar support.

Not all sanctuaries fit bright red. Luckily, five other colors can be selected:

Suitable for: PC gamers, console gamers, and office workers alike.

X Rocker 51396 Pro Series

Black home entertainment chair

Weight 54 lbs
Dimensions (LWH) 23.5" x 23" x 28.5"

The X Rocker has all the properties you’d expect from a den chair, with the addition of speakers built into the sides (at head level) and a high-end subwoofer. A true piece of home entertainment goodness.

They connect to a wireless transmitter and receiver which can connect to your:

Its pedestal is capable of tilting and twisting (not to mention slick in style). Although, it has a fixed height which is a deal breaker for those wanting to use it with a desk.

For all other purposes, this is a worthy contender. Watch a movie, play a game, read a book with some ambient sounds. And best of all, multiple X Rockers can hook up to each other – creating a unified audio experience for everyone in your shelter!

Bean Bags

These often get a bad rap, being seen as ‘play furniture’ while overlooking how great they actually are. Store it in the closet when not needed. Take it out when an unexpected guest arrives. Try do that with a full-sized chair!

CordaRoy Charcoal Beanbag & Sleeper

Man cave bean bag and bed
See Current Price

Weight 35.2 lbs
Dimensions (LWH) 42" x 42" x 32"

Featured in an episode of ABC’s Shark Tank, CordaRoy have made a seriously high-end product. And that say a lot when you look at the share number of bean bags on the market.

It ships in a deceptively small vacuum-sealed bag, but almost defies physics when opened – expanding to a size larger than a few of the mancave chairs above.

That begs the question: How?

The secret is in the material. Rather than the standard PVC beads, it uses premium foam which is shredded into countless pieces. Benefits include superior comfort and no noise. This is the way to go (assuming you don’t care for that unmistakable sound of beads rubbing together. I hear it now).

MCI Tip: Shredded foam in a lot of the alternatives are from recycled scraps, so rather than getting even strands (as with CordaRoy’s bag), it comes in various sizes which can lead to annoying lumps.

Also note that when you unzip the cover and pull it out, it folds into a full-size mattress which is 54 inches long, 75 inches wide, and 8 inches high. Enjoy the best of both worlds.

With the cover selling in 6 distinct colors, one is sure to match your place.

Hammocks

There’s a reason these are synonymous with tropical beaches. Unfortunately, people tend to assume you need to bolt them into walls or wrap it around two trees. Though those are perfectly fine, there are ones which come with a base – allowing you to set up provided you have space to spare.

Vivere Double Hammock

Man cave hammock with steel base
See Current Price

Weight 32.1 lbs
Dimensions (LWH) 108" x 42" x 41"

This awesome hammock lets you avoid the hassle of using a hammer and nails. Rip open the box, attach the steel parts which make up the stand, then hook each end to the inserts. Done.

Three choices of fabric are available:

  1. Cotton – Durable enough to withstand years of use; soft enough to pass as silk
  2. Sunbrella – Exclusive Sunbrella acrylic fit for any type of weather
  3. Polyester – Stain-resistant, resilient and stretchable

Though there are eleven color combos to choose from, they don’t have one in each fabric.

It is technically designed for two people (maximum capacity = 450lb) but is still great for only one. In fact, prepare to expend a considerable amount of willpower trying to get out of it. Not because hammocks are notoriously awkward to escape, but because it is one of the most relax-inducing experiences without the use of chemicals.
