An arcade cabinet is a piece of furniture built around a monitor and a circuit board. The body is plywood or particleboard, usually 3/4 in, capped at the edges with T-molding and wrapped in printed side art. A backlit marquee carries the title, a bezel masks the edges of the tube, the control panel holds the sticks and buttons at roughly waist height, and a coin door with a mechanism and a cash box sits at the front whether or not anyone still feeds it quarters. Behind that face sits the actual machine: a 19 or 25 in CRT and its chassis, a game board, a power supply producing the DC rails everything runs on, and the harness tying them together.

The numbers decide where one can go. A full upright runs around 70 in tall and 24 to 30 in wide, weighs 150 to 200 lb empty and can pass 300 lb with a CRT and steel parts inside, which makes basement stairs and a 30 in doorway the first real design constraint. Power is the second. A vintage CRT cabinet draws roughly 200 to 400 W against 50 to 150 W for an LCD and mini-PC build, and a 15 A household circuit tops out near 1,800 W, so three cabinets plus a bar fridge on one shared basement circuit is exactly the arrangement that trips a breaker mid-game. A dedicated circuit is cheap insurance in a room that will grow.

A 3/4 scale home replica is a different object with the same silhouette. Arcade1Up cabinets stand roughly 46 to 62 in tall, weigh 58 to 92 lb, run a 17 in LCD, have a non-functional coin door and sell new between about $330 and $600. They put a cabinet shape in a living room. They do not put an arcade machine in one.

JAMMA, and why boards became interchangeable

Before 1985 every manufacturer wired cabinets its own way, so an operator swapping games rewired the harness or bought another cabinet. The Japan Amusement Machinery Manufacturers Association fixed that with JAMMA, a 56-pin edge connector at 0.156 in spacing carrying power, video, audio and player controls in a defined order. After it, a board came out and another went in.

The standard assumed a typical game: one or two joysticks and up to three buttons per player. Anything richer needed help, which is why Street Fighter II shipped with a supplementary harness for its extra three buttons, and why pre-1985 titles still need custom wiring today. That single connector is also what makes the second-hand market work, since a generic cabinet with a JAMMA harness will run hundreds of different boards.

Japan took the idea furthest with candy cabinets, generic plastic and metal bodies designed to be re-flashed with whatever board an operator bought. Sega’s Astro City arrived in 1993 with a 29 in monitor in a fibreglass shell, the Blast City followed in 1996 alongside Virtua Fighter 3, and the NAOMI Universal Cabinet landed in 1998 with 31 kHz video for the NAOMI board. Those cabinets remain popular imports precisely because they were built to host anything.

Original hardware against an emulated multicade

A multicade is a cabinet running a PC, a Raspberry Pi or a multi-game JAMMA board instead of one game’s original PCB, and it usually offers hundreds of titles from one machine. That breadth is the whole argument for it, and it costs a fraction of assembling the same library in dedicated cabinets.

MAME is the software underneath most of them. Nicola Salmoria began writing single-game emulators in December 1996 and released MAME 0.1 on 5 February 1997 with support for Pac-Man, Rally-X, New Rally-X and Lady Bug; the project absorbed the MESS console and computer emulator in 2015 and moved to a BSD and GPL licence in March 2016. On the legal side, the emulator itself is settled ground, with Sega v. Accolade and Sony v. Connectix upholding reverse-engineered emulation in US courts. ROM files are a separate question: downloading games you do not own is infringement, and the widely repeated belief that owning the original board covers you is a hobbyist assumption rather than established doctrine.

What the emulated build gives up is subtler than input lag figures suggest. Original boards often ran at refresh rates like 57 Hz, and forcing that onto a fixed 60 Hz LCD introduces judder or extra buffering that a CRT never had, on top of the motion clarity a phosphor display gets for free. The retro arcade theme survives either way; the feel does not, quite.

From Computer Space to the living room

The cabinet predates the industry it created. Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney’s Computer Space shipped in 1971 in roughly 1,300 to 1,500 units, too strange for bar patrons, and their follow-up at Atari, Pong, became the first commercially successful coin-op video game in 1972.

The boom came from Japan. Space Invaders launched there in July 1978 and reached North America that November, grossing around $670 million in Japan alone by the end of that year and passing $1 billion by 1979, which is the moment the golden age of arcade video games is usually dated from. Pac-Man followed in 1980 and holds the Guinness record for the most successful coin-operated game, with 293,822 units installed within seven years. Then it stopped: US home video game revenue peaked near $3.2 billion in 1982 and collapsed to roughly $100 million by 1985.

Cabinets came home twice after that, first through MAME and the build-your-own scene of the late 1990s, then through retail. Arcade1Up launched in 2018 at around $399 a cabinet, put replicas in ordinary living rooms, and had its assets acquired by Basic Fun! in February 2026. A compact cocktail cabinet build is the modern version of the same instinct.

What goes wrong with an original

The base rots before anything else does. Particleboard cabinets stored on a damp basement floor swell from the bottom up, and once the material has expanded it does not come back, so the fix is cutting a new base section in plywood and re-edging it. Keep any cabinet off a slab on feet or a riser.

Electronics fail on a schedule. Electrolytic capacitors on monitor chassis and game boards dry out over decades and produce shaky geometry, colour shift or a dead board, and the standard repair is a cap kit for that specific chassis, advertised around $200 installed on a common Midway monitor. CRT burn-in is the one thing no kit fixes: the phosphor is worn where the same image sat for years, and only a replacement tube restores an even picture.

The last one is safety, and it deserves more caution than the rest combined. A colour CRT anode can hold around 25,000 V and the tube behaves like a large capacitor that stays charged for days after the machine is unplugged, so a chassis gets discharged through a 1k to 10k ohm resistor and checked with a meter before anyone reaches inside. Most arcade monitors made before roughly 1995 also use a hot chassis with no line isolation, which is why an isolation transformer belongs on the bench alongside the guidance in a walkthrough of refurbishing classic cabinets. Buy the transformer before the cabinet if the plan involves opening one up.
