A backlit mirror hides a strip of LEDs behind the glass and aims them at the wall, so the light you see is the halo spilling out around the edges rather than the source itself. The mirror hangs off a two-piece bracket that holds it a short distance proud of the wall, and that gap does all the work: Seura's Halo sits 1.5 inches out, which is enough for the strip to smear into an even wash instead of reading as a row of dots. Where a mirror also throws light forward onto a face, the silvering has been sandblasted or acid-etched away in a band so the LEDs behind it can shine through.

Behind a home bar it earns its place twice over. A mirrored back bar doubles the apparent depth of a narrow room and puts every bottle on the shelf in front of a lit surface, and the glow lands on the wall rather than in anyone's eyes, which is the opposite of what a downlight over the same shelf does. Quality shows up in two published numbers. Kohler's Verdera specifies 3000 K, a minimum 90 CRI, 2,200 lumens and around 59,000 hours of LED life; Seura's Halo runs 3000 K at 90 plus CRI. Prices split just as clearly, from about $120 for a 24 by 36 inch import to $1,199 for the Kohler, $1,239 and up for the Seura, and $1,421 to $1,849 across Electric Mirror's Fusion sizes.

What a backlit mirror is not is a task light. The output points backwards at the wall, which makes it ambient and decorative by design, and anyone shaving in front of one will be standing in their own shadow. Front-lit mirrors solve that problem, and plenty of products do both at once, but they are separate light sources doing separate jobs. Read the spec sheet for which one you are buying.

What the gap behind the glass decides

Three things determine whether the halo looks like a designed fixture or a strip of tape someone stuck on a mirror. The standoff distance comes first. Too tight and the individual diodes read through as bright scallops on the wall; the 1.5 inches Seura builds into the Halo is a reasonable working figure, and any DIY version deserves a mock-up against the actual wall colour before final mounting.

Tape density and voltage come second. A commercial-grade LED strip such as Diode LED's Blaze puts out 233 lumens per foot at 2700 K with 90 plus CRI, and running 24 volts rather than 12 halves the current for the same wattage, which cuts voltage drop and roughly doubles the run length before the far end visibly dims. On a 60 inch mirror with tape on all four sides, that is the difference between an even perimeter and a bright top with a tired bottom corner.

Colour is third. Warm bins at 2700 K and 3000 K read as relaxed and are the right choice behind a bar, and ANSI C78.377 sets the nominal bins that manufacturers label against. CRI matters more here than in most rooms because the light lands on faces and on glassware: 90 plus CRI holds red tones that an 80 CRI source flattens, and the newer IES TM-30 method reports fidelity and gamut separately for the same reason. Wiring, dimming and damp locations

The driver is a constant-voltage unit at 12 or 24 volts, usually tucked behind the mirror or in the wall cavity, which means a junction box behind the fixture rather than a dedicated circuit. Where the mirror plugs in instead of being hardwired, the receptacle serving it falls under the NEC's GFCI rules for bathrooms and other wet areas, and Seura's own manual requires a GFCI outlet for plug-in versions in damp locations or the warranty lapses. That reading is worth understanding: the code language is written around receptacles, not around hardwired luminaires, so the answer depends on how your mirror is fed.

Near a bar sink, treat the location as damp and specify accordingly, at IP44 or better. Dimming is the other decision that goes wrong quietly. Pair a legacy leading-edge dimmer built for incandescent loads with a modern LED driver and you get buzz, flicker, or both, so match the driver to a trailing-edge, ELV or 0 to 10 volt control from the manufacturer's compatibility list. Backlit, front-lit, or a fixture above the glass

Three products get sold under the same shelf label. A backlit mirror throws light backwards onto the wall: ambient, flattering, useless for grooming. A front-lit mirror pushes light forward through an etched band in the silvering and works as task lighting at a vanity. A plain mirror with a bar of lights above it is two separate objects, wired separately, and is the only version where you can change the light source without replacing the glass.

For a home bar the backlit version is nearly always the right one, because the job is atmosphere and depth rather than illumination, and the fixture disappears into the wall it lights. For a bathroom vanity or a shaving corner, front-lit or a pair of sconces at face height will do more good. A mirror that combines both, with independent switching, is the flexible option and costs accordingly. What none of them replaces is the general layer above: a backlit mirror is accent lighting, so plan the room's ambient level separately rather than expecting the mirror to carry it, as the lighting roundups lay out.

Common mistakes

Mounting the tape flat against the glass or the wall. With no gap there is no diffusion, and the wall shows a row of hot dots. Space the strip back on a channel or a spacer and test it on the finished wall before committing.

Buying on lumens and ignoring CRI. Cheap tape at 80 CRI kills red tones, which is exactly what a bar mirror lights: faces, amber spirits, red labels. Specify 90 plus CRI and check the R9 figure if the maker publishes it.

Using the wrong dimmer. This is the single most common cause of hum and flicker in an otherwise good install. Read the driver's compatibility list, then buy that dimmer rather than the one already in the wall.

Ignoring damp ratings near a sink. A dry-rated fixture behind a wet bar corrodes at the connections and the mirror desilvers from the edges inward as moisture works under the backing. Use an IP44 or better assembly and keep the glass clear of the splash zone.

Trusting adhesive alone. Tape backing lets go under sustained heat and humidity, and a strip that drops inside a sealed mirror assembly means taking the whole thing off the wall. Back the adhesive with an aluminium channel and screws wherever the mirror runs warm or the room runs humid.

Do backlit mirrors need a special circuit?

Usually not a dedicated one. Most hardwire to a standard junction box behind the mirror, with a low-voltage driver doing the work. What matters is where the connection sits: a plug-in version near a sink needs its receptacle GFCI protected, and manufacturers such as Seura make that a warranty condition in damp locations. Also check the dimming type, because pairing an old incandescent dimmer with an LED driver is the usual cause of buzzing and flicker.

Why does my backlit mirror show stripes on the wall?

The gap between the LED strip and the wall is too small. Light needs distance to blend, and mounted flush the strip projects each diode as its own bright scallop. Commercial mirrors solve it by standing the glass an inch or two off the wall, and Seura builds a 1.5 inch standoff into the Halo.
