The back bar is the wall of cabinetry, shelving and mirror standing behind the bartender, and it does two jobs at once: it holds the working stock and it sells it. A typical build is a base cabinet somewhere between 36 and 45 inches tall and 24 to 30 inches deep, usually with a refrigerated unit dropped into the middle of it, topped by a run of stepped display shelving and backed by a mirror. Commercial coolers set the depth for most of them, since a True TBB24-72-3G measures 72 and one eighth inches wide by 24 and seven eighths deep by 34 and a quarter tall, and the cabinetry gets built around whatever goes in.

Get the shelving wrong and the fixture stops working as storage. A standard 750 millilitre bottle stands about 11.8 inches, so a tier needs roughly 14.5 inches of clear height before a bottle goes in and comes back out without being tipped, and a 1.75 litre handle wants closer to 16.5. Depth matters just as much: one row of bottles takes about 10 to 12 inches, two rows about 13.5, and anything shallower than roughly 6.5 inches will only hold narrow-based bottles. Those are the numbers that decide whether the home bar on your drawing fits the bottles you actually own.

Two other things share the name and neither is this. A barback is a person, the bartender's assistant who restocks ice and liquor, cuts garnish and clears glassware through a service. The other confusion is with a liquor cabinet, which is furniture with doors that hides bottles away; a back bar puts them on show and gives whoever is pouring a work surface at hip height in front of them.

Shelf depth, spacing and the aisle behind the bar

Three measurements decide whether the fixture works, and only two of them are on the fixture.

The aisle comes first. Commercial design guides put a workable bartender alley at 31 to 37 inches, with around 30 inches the practical floor for one person in a tight footprint and 36 to 42 inches the comfortable target. Two people passing each other back there want 42 to 48. That is a design convention rather than a building code requirement, but it is the one people regret, because the aisle is set by the depth of the cabinets on both sides and neither is easy to change afterwards.

Shelf clearance comes second. Leave 18 to 20 inches between the counter and the first shelf, nearer 22 if tall bottles live there, then 14.5 inches minimum for 750 millilitre bottles, 16.5 for handles and around 19 for oversized formats. Uniform tier spacing looks tidy on a drawing and fails the first time a magnum arrives.

Glass thickness comes third, and it is the one people guess at. Quarter-inch glass suits spans under about 24 inches and 3/8 inch takes over from 24 to 36. The load figures fall away fast with span: annealed quarter-inch glass carries roughly 73 pounds per square foot over a one-foot span and only about 2 pounds per square foot at four feet, while 3/8 inch runs from around 196 down to about 8 across the same range. Tempering multiplies both by roughly four. A full row of bottles weighs considerably more than the shelf looks like it should be asked to hold.

Lighting the bottles without cooking them

Back bar lighting is display lighting, and the convention behind a bar runs warm and high-fidelity: 2700 to 3000 K at 90 plus CRI, with strips putting out somewhere around 450 lumens per foot so amber spirits and red labels read as themselves instead of as brown. Mount the LED strip four to six inches behind the bottle line so light passes through the glass rather than glaring off the front of the label, and save narrow 15 to 25 degree spots for the few bottles worth picking out.

Heat and ultraviolet are what quietly cost you. Light below roughly 510 nanometres degrades the esters and terpenes carrying whisky's aroma, and spirits keep best at 55 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit, so a sealed cabinet lit by halogen is a slow way to flatten an expensive bottle. LEDs emit very little useful ultraviolet, which is most of the reason they took the category over. The rest of the lighting plan still has to happen separately, because a back bar lights bottles and nothing else in the room.

Power is worth settling before the cabinet is built. The 2023 NEC dropped the old six-foot allowance in 210.8(A)(7) and now calls for GFCI protection on receptacles in a designated beverage preparation area, basement wet bars included, so the cooler, the driver and the blender all sit downstream of that.

Where the mirrored back bar came from

The back bar as a manufactured object belongs to the American saloon boom of the late nineteenth century, when Chicago's Brunswick, Balke and Collender Company sold matched front and back bar sets alongside its billiard tables. Those fixtures were built to come apart and ship, which is why hundred-year-old back bars still turn up intact in their second and third rooms. The company is reported to have stopped building them in 1912, reading Prohibition several years before it arrived.

The mirror was practical before it was decorative. Cornell's architectural typology archive describes historic back bars as mirrored millwork panels, and in a room lit by gas or early electric lamps a full-height mirror threw scarce light back into the space, doubled the apparent bottle count and let the bartender watch the room without turning around. All three reasons still hold, which is why the format outlived its original clientele by a century. The old west saloon look leans on exactly this arrangement.

Common mistakes

Buying shelving without measuring the bottles. Prefabricated tiers are frequently under 10 inches deep or under 14 inches of clear height, and a bottle that will not stand upright makes the shelf decorative. Measure the tallest and widest bottles you actually keep, then build or buy to those.

Stacking three rows deep. The back row's labels become unreadable, which defeats the point of an open display, and reaching a rear bottle means moving two others first. Two rows at about 13.5 inches of depth is the practical ceiling.

Under-gauging the shelf. Thin acrylic and quarter-inch annealed glass on a four-foot span both bow under a full row, and glass fails without warning rather than sagging first as a courtesy. Match thickness to span, use tempered glass, and add a mid-span support past about 36 inches.

Setting the aisle from the cabinet you already bought. Pick the working clearance first, at 36 inches or better for one person, then let it dictate how deep the base cabinet is allowed to be. Working the other way round produces a bar nobody enjoys standing behind.

Running the cooler on a shared circuit. A back bar cooler is a compressor that cycles all evening, so it wants its own supply with the GFCI protection the current code requires, rather than sharing with the outlets guests plug phones into.
