Two numbers decide whether people can actually sit at it. The overhang past the bar face wants 8.5 to 12 inches for knees, with roughly 8 inches the practical floor, and anything under that turns the stool into a perch. Allow about 24 inches of bar length per person, the planning figure the trade calls the rule of 24, so a ten-foot run seats five in comfort rather than the six you can physically fit stools beneath. Get either wrong and the bar stools end up the wrong height for the surface or nobody's legs fit under it.
Height is a convention, not a code. Nothing in the residential or commercial building codes specifies 42 inches; it came from the trade and from the stool market that grew up around it, and a bar built at 40 or 44 is not wrong so much as committed to buying stools that match. The one place a real standard exists is accessibility, and it does not reach into houses: the 2010 ADA Standards set 28 to 34 inches for a dining or work surface at section 902.3, with knee clearance at 306.3 running from 9 up to 27 inches above the floor, 30 inches wide and 11 inches deep, and those apply to places of public accommodation.
Choosing the surface, and what each one survives
Alcohol is the design constraint most people underestimate. Ethanol is a solvent, and a finish that shrugs off water will haze, soften or lift under a spilled measure of spirit left to sit for a few hours.
Epoxy pour is the popular answer because it produces a thick glassy film that does not care about spirits. It is also the least forgiving to apply. A flood coat is capped at about 1/8 inch per pour, so depth gets built up in layers: TotalBoat rates its tabletop resin at that thickness and 77 degrees Fahrenheit as tack free in around four hours, sandable at eight and fully cured in five to seven days, and a mixed gallon covers roughly 12 square feet. Deep-pour formulas reach about 2 inches, laid in one-inch layers with waits between. Heat is the practical ceiling, with products rated somewhere between 120 and 135 degrees Fahrenheit, which a hot mug will pass straight through. Food-contact claims cite FDA 21 CFR 175.300, a genuine regulation covering resinous coatings, but compliance is the maker's own statement about fully cured resin rather than any FDA certification of your bar.
Solid hardwood and butcher block need a film finish that survives spirits, which means marine spar varnish or a two-part conversion varnish rather than a wipe-on oil. General Finishes asks for three to four coats of its conversion varnish and allows up to 5% crosslinker where resistance to alcohols and high-pH cleaners matters. Stone is the low-maintenance option and carries its own constraint in the cantilever: guidance traced to the Natural Stone Institute puts unsupported overhang at about 10 inches for 3 centimetre stone and 6 inches for 2 centimetre, with the cantilever never more than a third of the total depth.
Installed cost per square foot runs roughly $40 to $100 for granite, $50 to $120 for quartz, $50 to $150 for butcher block, $65 to $185 for concrete and $80 to $225 for stainless, with laminate well below all of them. Priced by the running foot, a bar top lands somewhere around $150 to $500 installed, which for most home bar builds is the single largest line on the sheet.
Bar top versus bar rail
They meet along one line and get bought as a single thing, which is where the confusion starts. The bar top is the horizontal field, the working and serving surface at 16 to 20 inches deep that everything else sits on. The bar rail is the shaped moulding applied to its front edge, with a rabbet cut into the back seating over the top's substrate.
The practical consequence is ordering sequence. The rail's rabbet is milled to a fixed depth, commonly 3/4 inch, and it has to match the finished thickness of whatever the top is built from. A single 3/4 inch plywood deck, a doubled 1 and 1/2 inch build-up and a 3 centimetre stone slab all present different edges, so the rail gets chosen after the top rather than alongside it.
The other consequence is height. Standard 42 inch bar height is measured to the bar top surface with the rail excluded, so the armrest finishes slightly proud of the working plane. That is deliberate, since the rail is a lip as much as a rest, and it is what stops a knocked glass reaching the guest's lap. On a solid slab, some makers skip the applied moulding altogether and carve the profile straight into the wood.
Where the bar top came from
The word arrived a long time before the furniture did. Bar entered English in the late twelfth century from the Old French barre, a beam or a gate, and by the 1590s it named the counter in a tavern over which drinks were served, the physical line separating the stock from the customers. The same root gives the courtroom bar and the barrister. Everything the modern surface does still follows from that: it is a boundary first and a table second, which is why it stands taller than a table and why the working side sits lower than the guest side.
Why the height landed on 42 inches rather than 40 or 44 is not documented anywhere reliable. No code body and no trade association sets it, and every source repeating the figure is a retailer or a design guide. What can be said is that it moves in lockstep with the stool market, which settled on a 30 inch seat, and the two numbers now hold each other in place. Counter height at 36 inches came out of the kitchen, and the two-level bar exists so a builder can have both at once. Those proportions are what any speakeasy-style build is copying, along with the long polished hardwood counter and brass foot rail of the saloon era.
Common mistakes
Building the top before choosing the stools. Seat height is fixed by surface height minus 10 to 12 inches, and stools are sold in fixed tiers, so settle the finished top height including slab thickness and rail, then buy to it.
Skimping the overhang. Under about 8 inches, knees meet the bar face and the stool never pulls all the way in. Ten to twelve inches is the working range and 15 is comfortable.
Cantilevering stone past what it will carry. Ten inches unsupported for 3 centimetre stone and six for 2 centimetre are the guidance figures, and stone gives no warning sag before it cracks. Anything beyond those numbers gets corbels or a steel plate.
Pouring epoxy too thick. A flood coat much over 1/8 inch traps its own exothermic heat as it cures, which surfaces as bubbles, cloudiness, cracking or a scorched centre. Build depth in layers, respect the recoat window, and hold the room at the temperature the technical data sheet asks for.
Bolting a solid wood top down solid. Wood moves across its width with the seasons, by a quarter of an inch or more on a wide slab, so it wants figure-8 or slotted tabletop fasteners rather than screws through fixed holes, plus at least 3 millimetres of expansion gap where it meets anything rigid and 5 in a humid climate. Seal the underside and the end grain to the same standard as the top, or it takes on moisture from one face and cups.
