A bar rail is the shaped length of hardwood finishing the customer-facing front edge of a bar top: a rolled armrest on the upper face, a rabbet or notch cut into the back so it seats over the top's substrate, and on the deeper profiles an apron below that closes off the front. It arrives raw, in six and eight foot lengths, in oak, maple, cherry, walnut, mahogany or poplar, and gets stained and sealed to match the top after it is fitted. Sizes vary a great deal by profile: one widely sold Chicago rail measures 1 and 1/8 inches high by 4 and 1/2 wide, others in the same family run 1 and 5/8 by 7 and 3/8, and a single moulding house stocks 33 profiles from roughly 3 inches to nearly 7 inches across.

It solves a problem the bar top cannot solve on its own. A square-edged plywood and laminate counter puts a hard corner exactly where forearms land, leaves the substrate's layered edge on show, and gives a knocked drink a clean run onto the guest's lap. The rail rounds the corner, hides the edge and raises a lip that catches most of what goes over. The rabbet is the part to check before ordering: one common profile is cut 3/4 inch deep by 1 and 3/4 wide and takes any single or double layer top of at least 3/4 inch, and since that notch is milled at the factory and cannot be changed afterwards, the substrate build-up has to be settled first.

Three separate things get called rails behind a bar and only one of them is this. The foot rail is the metal tube down at floor level. The speed rail is the stainless well at the bartender's hip holding the well liquor. Bar rail on its own, in a lumberyard or a moulding catalogue, means the edge profile, and standard 42 inch bar height is measured to the bar top surface with the rail excluded.

Profiles, rabbets and getting the corners right

The Chicago rail is the profile everyone names and the least standardised thing in the category. Suppliers publish it at 1 and 1/8 by 4 and 1/2, at 1 and 1/2 by 5 and 1/2, at 1 and 5/8 by 7 and 3/8, and at 1 and 3/4 by 7 and 1/2, all under the same name. What they share is the look rather than the size: a thick curved apron under a rolled rest, not a thin lipped edge. One long-standing maker distinguishes its version by that apron and by radius rather than mitred corners, offering corner blocks machined from three-inch stock at 6 and 12 inch radii, with straight runs available uncut up to 16 feet.

Rabbets vary as much as the profiles do. Some carry a double rabbet for a sub-top and a countertop layer, some a single rabbet for the countertop only, and a few are flat with none at all. Measure the finished thickness of the top, including any laminate or stone, before choosing one.

Price tracks species closely. American Wood Moldings lists the same profile at $25.50 per linear foot in maple and $38.85 in Honduras mahogany, with poplar, red oak and cherry sitting progressively below that, all of it shipping unfinished. Radius corners cost more than mitres and earn it on an outside corner, because a 1/32 inch offset on a mitre reads as a gap from across the room.

Bar rail versus foot rail

They share a name and very little else. The bar rail is a wood moulding at counter height on the guest side, while the foot rail is a metal tube near the floor, and the tube is by far the older of the two.

Foot rail tubing comes in two standard outside diameters, 1.5 and 2 inches, with 2 inch the more commonly stocked, at around 0.050 inch wall thickness in polished brass, satin brass, stainless or matte black. Mounting height depends on the bracket rather than on a fixed rule: roughly 6 to 7 inches to the centre of the tube is the usual convention, and suppliers describe a working range of about 5 to 8 inches once floor-mount, ninety-degree and centre-post brackets are compared. Set a bracket within six inches of each end and then space the rest about four feet apart. Two-inch polished tubing runs around $50 for two feet and $215 for eight.

Both rails do the same underlying job from opposite ends of the body: they give a drinker somewhere to shift weight. The foot rail predates the bar stool entirely, which is why it survives in rooms where nobody stands any more.

Where the brass rail and the Chicago rail came from

The foot rail has the better documented history. Food historian Andrew F. Smith records American hotel bars from the 1790s onward built with hardwood counters and brass foot rails for standing drinkers, and by the late 1800s Brunswick, Balke and Collender's catalogue sold foot rails in brass or galvanised iron with several bracket styles, some hinged so the floor could be swept underneath. Comfort was not the only reason for them. Troughs ran beneath the bar carrying tobacco spit and waste to a floor drain, and the rail kept patrons' shoes clear of the business. All of this predates stools being normal in a saloon, which is where belly up to the bar comes from literally rather than figuratively.

The Chicago rail's name is trade legend rather than documented history. The maker most associated with it dates the style to American taverns, VFW halls and firehouses in the 1940s and 1950s, often in mahogany, and claims continuous production since 1945. No independent archival source confirms either the naming or the date, so treat it as a shop story that happens to describe a real and very specific profile.

Common mistakes

Ordering before measuring the substrate. Rabbet depth is fixed at the mill, so a rail cut for a 3/4 inch top will not seat down onto a doubled-up 1 and 1/2 inch one, and packing the gap out afterwards always shows.

Cutting to exact length. Buy long. A single blown mitre on an eight-foot length of mahogany at nearly $39 a foot is an expensive lesson, and every install guide worth reading says dry-fit the whole run before glue or fasteners come near it.

Fastening through the face. The rail goes on screwed up from underneath through pre-drilled holes with glue at the seams, and anything driven through the show surface has to be plugged, which never quite disappears in a curved profile.

Ignoring wood movement across the joint. Solid hardwood moves several percent tangentially with seasonal humidity while the plywood substrate under it barely moves at all, so a rail glued rigidly across its full width eventually opens a crack at the seam or splits outright. Fasten it so the wood can move, and keep the room's humidity somewhere near constant.

Finishing after installation. Stain and seal each length before it goes on, end grain included, and finish the ends properly instead of capping them. End grain takes stain differently and drinks glue, and an unsealed end at the far corner of a home bar is where water damage always starts.

Can bar rail be curved?

Around a corner, yes, using pre-made radius blocks rather than bending the moulding. Suppliers offer corner pieces in 1.5, 3, 6 and 12 inch radii, machined from thick solid stock so the grain and the profile carry through without a mitre joint. They cost more than cutting two forty-five degree mitres, and they earn it on an outside corner, where an error as small as 1/32 of an inch opens a visible gap. A continuous sweeping curve means custom work.
