A boom arm clamps to the edge of a desk and holds a microphone wherever you put it, using a two-segment linkage with springs or a gas piston to hold position against gravity. The arm carries the mic out over the keyboard, angles it down toward your mouth, and folds back out of the way when you finish. Rode quotes 940 mm of horizontal reach and 860 mm of vertical travel for the PSA1+; Elgato gives the Wave Mic Arm LP 740 mm out and 550 mm up. In a video ready man cave, that reach is what lets a broadcast mic sit close enough to sound good without taking over the shot.

Distance is the whole point. Shure’s own guide for the SM7B puts the working range at 1 to 6 inches from the mouth, and the MV7 ships with a Near preset covering 1 to 6 inches and a Far preset covering 6 to 18. Hold a dynamic mic at arm’s length on a desk stand and the room arrives with it: reflections off the wall behind you, the fan in the PC, the neighbour’s dog. Halving the distance to the source does more than most of the gear people buy to fix the problem afterwards.

An arm is a positioning device and nothing else. It does not isolate the mic from the desk, which is why a shock mount belongs between them; without one, every keystroke travels up the clamp and into the capsule. It does not stop plosives, which is the pop filter’s job, and it does not treat the room. Anyone who buys a premium arm and still sounds boxy has solved the wrong problem, and acoustic panels behind the desk would have done more.

Thread, clamp and load: the three specs that decide fit

Compatibility comes down to three published numbers, and all three appear on the datasheet.

Thread first. American microphone hardware uses a 5/8 inch by 27 thread, European gear uses 3/8 inch by 16, and photo and tripod mounts use 1/4 inch by 20. Yellowtec specifies 5/8-27 UNS 2A on the m!ka, Rode ships a universal 3/8 to 5/8 adapter with the PSA1+, and Elgato puts a 1/4 inch thread on the Wave Mic Arm LP with both adapters in the box. Mismatches are cheap to fix, but only if you catch them before the arm arrives.

The clamp catches people out. Rode’s PSA1+ takes a desk up to 70 mm thick and offers a grommet mount for surfaces up to 55 mm, Elgato’s arms clamp up to 60 mm, and the budget Neewer NW-35 handles 2.75 inches. Measure the desk at the exact spot you plan to mount rather than at the thickest point, and check there is no drawer rail underneath.

Load rating decides the rest. The PSA1+ is rated for 94 g to 1.2 kg, or 0.2 to 2.7 lb. Blue quotes 2.4 lb for the Compass and states that the figure includes the shock mount. Elgato rates the LP at 4.4 lb and the gas piston Pro at 6.6 lb, while Yellowtec puts 2 kg across the m!ka range. Now weigh what you intend to hang: a Shure SM7B is 1.69 lb bare, an Electro-Voice RE20 is 1.63 lb, and a shock mount adds several ounces on top. Against a 2.4 lb ceiling that is thin headroom, and a spring working at the edge of its range is the spring that sags by Thursday.

Boom arm against the desk stand

A desk stand puts a weighted base on the surface and a tube above it. A boom arm clamps to the edge and puts nothing on the surface at all, which is the practical difference: the arm frees the desk and lets the mic move between a talking position and a parked position without being picked up and set down.

The second difference shows up on camera. A round-base stand tall enough to reach your mouth sits in the middle of the frame with its tube running vertically through the shot. An arm approaches from the side or from above, which is the same logic film boom operators work to, getting the mic as close as possible without letting it enter frame. Low profile arms such as Elgato’s LP exist for that reason alone, keeping the elbow below the shoulder line so a webcam sees a face rather than a linkage.

Where the stand wins is stability and price. A 25 dollar stand will not creep, sag or creak, and there is no clamp to work loose. If the mic never moves and never appears on camera, an arm is buying convenience rather than sound.

From the Anglepoise lamp to the podcast desk

The mechanism came from lighting, not audio. George Carwardine, a car suspension engineer, worked out a constant-tension spring linkage that would hold an arm in any position without clamps or counterweights, and patented it in 1933 as the Anglepoise. Jac Jacobsen licensed the principle in Norway and launched the Luxo L-1 in 1937, a parallelogram arm familiar to anyone who has seen a drafting table or a Pixar title card.

Broadcast studios wanted the same trick for microphones, and radio and television desks carried sprung arms for decades before a consumer version existed. The current market is a podcasting artefact. Blue’s Compass spec sheet is dated 2017 and the arm shipped bundled with the Yeticaster kit, Rode’s PSA1 arrived alongside the Procaster and Podcaster microphones, and Elgato’s low profile arms were drawn around the streaming camera shot rather than a radio studio. The linkage inside all of them is still Carwardine’s.

Where boom arms go wrong

Clamping to the wrong desk. Glass tops, hollow-core panels and unsupported overhangs flex, and that flex shows up as a wobble on camera every time you touch the keyboard. Clamp within the arm’s rated thickness at a point over a leg or a stretcher, and use the grommet mount if the desk has a cable hole.

Mounting on the camera side. An arm crossing the frame is the most common streaming setup error and the easiest to avoid. Put it on the side away from the camera and the key light, or choose a low profile design that stays below the shoulder line.

Overloading the spring. An SM7B in a shock mount sits close to the ceiling of a 2.4 or 3.3 lb arm. It will hold on day one and droop by month three. Buy for the weight plus a margin, not for the weight exactly.

Skipping the shock mount. The arm is bolted to the same desk as your keyboard, so the mechanical path from key press to capsule is short and direct. A shock mount breaks that path. Nothing else in the chain will.

Routing the cable badly. A cable pulled tight across a joint fights the arm’s travel and eventually drags the mic out of position. Use the internal channel if the arm has one, and leave a loop of slack at every pivot.

Frequently asked questions

What does a microphone boom arm actually do?

It holds the microphone in a fixed position close to your mouth and keeps the desk surface clear, using a sprung or gas-piston linkage that stays where you put it. That closeness is the real benefit: a mic a few inches from the source picks up far less room reflection, computer fan noise and background sound than one sitting on a stand across the desk. The arm also swings out of the way between sessions without needing to be unplugged or stored.

How far from my mouth should the microphone sit?

Shure puts the SM7B working range at 1 to 6 inches and splits the MV7 into a Near preset for 1 to 6 inches and a Far preset for 6 to 18. Closer gives a warmer, bassier tone through the proximity effect and rejects more of the room; further sounds more natural but brings the room with it. Start at about four inches, slightly off to the side of your mouth rather than straight in front, and adjust by ear.

Will a boom arm hold a Shure SM7B?

Only if the arm is rated for it. The SM7B weighs 1.69 pounds before a shock mount is added, and budget arms are commonly rated at 2.4 to 3.3 pounds total, so a heavy mic sits near the ceiling of what the spring can hold. Arms that manage it comfortably include the Rode PSA1+ at 2.7 pounds and the Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP at 4.4 pounds. Check the published capacity, then leave headroom.

Do I need a shock mount as well as a boom arm?

Yes, for anything on a desk you also type at. The arm is bolted to the same surface as the keyboard, so a key press, a mug set down or a knee against the desk sends vibration straight up the clamp into the microphone capsule. A shock mount suspends the mic on elastic bands and interrupts that path. It earns its place twice: it tames typing thumps, and it swallows the clunk of repositioning the arm between takes, something a static desk stand never produces.

Can a boom arm fix a room that sounds echoey?

No. An arm changes where the microphone sits, not how the room behaves, and moving the mic closer only reduces how much room you capture relative to your voice. A bare-walled basement with a hard floor still sounds like one. Fixing that means absorption on the first reflection points, something soft on the floor, and breaking up the parallel surfaces behind the desk. The arm helps, but it is not the treatment.
