A turntable spins a record at a fixed speed while a stylus tracks the groove wall, and a cartridge converts that microscopic movement into a signal measured in thousandths of a volt. Nothing downstream can use that signal as it arrives. It goes first to a phono stage, which applies the inverse RIAA curve and lifts the level to something an amplifier recognises, and only then to the speakers. Platter, tonearm, cartridge and phono stage are four separate decisions, and a deck that disappoints usually fails at one of them rather than all four. Drive type is the first fork in the road. A belt drive isolates the motor from the platter through an elastic belt, keeping motor vibration out of the record, while a direct drive couples the motor to the platter for more torque and faster speed recovery, which is why DJ decks are direct drive. Speed stability gets measured as wow and flutter: audiophiles target 0.10 to 0.15 percent or better, most listeners cannot detect variation below about 0.20 percent, and a good belt drive with a fresh belt and a heavy platter reaches around 0.05 percent. Quality direct drives match that using servo correction. Records themselves come at 33 and a third, 45 and 78 RPM, the last a shellac-era standard that predates the LP entirely. None of that makes a turntable a stereo system, and the all-in-one suitcase players sold as record players blur the point deliberately. The deck is at most a third of the job: cartridge, phono stage and speakers each shape the result as much as the platter does, which is why the unhurried vinyl listening session people picture when they buy one depends on the whole chain rather than the pretty part of it.
Setting a deck up so it stops eating records
Three adjustments do most of the work, and all three are measurable rather than matters of taste. Tracking force is set to the cartridge maker’s specified weight in grams using a stylus gauge rather than by feel: too light and the stylus rattles in the groove and mistracks, too heavy and it wears the groove and itself. Anti-skate cancels the inward pull created by the offset between the tonearm pivot and the stylus tip, an unavoidable artefact of pivoted arm geometry, and it usually gets set near the tracking force figure. Alignment then decides where along the record the stylus sits tangent to the groove. Alignment has three published geometries and no governing body behind any of them. Baerwald, also called Löfgren A, places null points at 66 mm and 120.9 mm from the spindle with 16.21 mm of overhang, and is the most common choice because it minimises average distortion across a side. Löfgren B moves the nulls to 70.3 mm and 116.6 mm with 16.64 mm of overhang. Stevenson uses 14.44 mm of overhang and pushes accuracy toward the inner grooves, where the last track of a side lives. A printed protractor costs nothing and settles the question in twenty minutes. Cartridge output decides what phono stage the system needs. Moving magnet designs put out roughly 3 to 5 mV, moving coil designs 0.2 to 1.5 mV, an order of magnitude apart, so an MC cartridge needs a step-up transformer or a dedicated high-gain input. Deck prices start around $250 to $500 for entry audiophile models, $500 to $700 for mid-range, and $1,297 for a Technics SL-1200MK7, with no meaningful ceiling above that.
A phono input is not a line input
The one-line distinction: a phono input applies the RIAA playback curve and roughly 40 dB of extra gain, while a line input applies neither. Records are cut with the bass reduced and the treble boosted, which keeps groove excursion small enough to fit a full side onto a disc and holds surface noise down. Playback has to reverse that. Plug a turntable without its own phono stage into a line input, an aux socket or a Bluetooth speaker, and you hear the record exactly as it was cut: thin, quiet and harsh, with no low end at all. Nothing is broken and no amount of tone control repairs it. Modern gear blurs this, since many decks include a switchable phono stage and some include Bluetooth as well. Check three places before assuming: the deck itself, the amplifier or AV receiver for an input marked phono, and the box for a separate outboard preamp. Exactly one phono stage belongs in the chain. Running two in series overloads the input and sounds worse than either alone, which happens constantly when a deck with its preamp left switched on meets an amp that already has a phono input.
1954: the RIAA ends the curve wars
Before 1954, playing a record correctly meant knowing which label pressed it. More than a hundred competing equalisation curves were in circulation, from Columbia, Decca, RCA, the AES and the NAB among others, and serious playback gear carried selector switches to match them. Choose wrong and the tonal balance was audibly off, on a record that was perfectly fine. RCA Victor published its New Orthophonic curve in 1953, and the Recording Industry Association of America standardised on it in 1954. Every record cut since has assumed that curve, and every phono stage built since implements its inverse, which is why a deck from 1975 and a pressing from 2026 work together without anyone thinking about it. It is one of the more durable standards in consumer audio, and it is the reason vinyl playback is interchangeable at all. Nothing similar ever happened to tonearm geometry, where Baerwald, Löfgren B and Stevenson remain competing engineering conventions rather than codified standards, and speed accuracy figures stay manufacturer-published with no independent audit. The market, meanwhile, has grown for a very long time: the RIAA reported US vinyl revenue of $1.04 billion in 2025, up 9.3 percent on the previous year, across 46.8 million units against 43.4 million, its nineteenth consecutive year of growth.
Common mistakes
Setting tracking force by feel is the first, and it costs records rather than money. A stylus riding too light chatters in the groove and mistracks on loud passages, one riding too heavy grinds away at both the vinyl and the tip, and neither damage reverses. A stylus gauge costs less than a single album and takes two minutes to use. Placement is the second. A deck sitting on the same shelf as the speakers, or on a suspended timber floor with any bounce in it, feeds acoustic and footfall energy straight back into the stylus, which shows up as a low howl that gets worse with volume. Put the deck on a wall-mounted shelf decoupled from the floor or on an isolation platform, and keep the bookshelf speakers several feet away rather than either side of it. Skipping alignment after fitting a new cartridge is the third, and it is invisible until the inner grooves of every side start sounding harder than the outer ones. Use a Baerwald or Löfgren protractor to set overhang and the null points before playing anything valuable.
